Technically, "5+3i" is the correct way of writing that number. All numbers can be written in the form "a+bi." a is the real part, and b is the imaginary part. i is √(-1). For real numbers (ex: 1, 2, 3, π, 672... etc.) "b" is zero. A complex number is when both a and b ≠ 0.
 
Look up "complex numbers" if you didn't get that. Or take an Algebra 2 class.
